Dry noses are a common problem during the winter when forced air heaters and dry air can suck the moisture out of your sinuses. Allergies, cold weather, and dehydration can also cause dry sinuses, leading to discomfort and infection. Luckily, there are some simple remedies to treat dry nasal passages and keep them healthy.
1. Use a Humidifier
If dry air is the culprit causing dry nasal passages, a humidifier can be a quick and easy dry nose treatment. Look for a humidifier that can be placed near your bed so you can reap the benefits while you sleep. Adding moisture to the air will help loosen congestion and keep your nose from drying out.
2. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of fluids helps keep your entire body, including your sinuses, hydrated. Aim to drink eight glasses of water a day or more if you are sweating or vomiting. You can also try sucking on ice chips or chewing sugar-free gum to keep your mouth and nose moist.
3. Use a Saline Spray
Saline nasal sprays help moisturize your sinuses and can be used as often as needed. Look for a saline spray that is preservative-free to avoid irritation.
4. Apply a Nasal Gel or Ointment
If you have persistent dryness, you may want to try using a lubricating gel or ointment inside your nostrils. These products are available without a prescription and can provide long-lasting relief.
5. Avoid Irritants
Several things can irritate and dry out your nose, such as smoke, harsh chemicals, and hot, dry air. If you suffer from allergies, try to avoid triggers like pollen and dust. When you are outside in cold weather, protect your nose with a scarf or ski mask.
6. Inhale Steam
One of the quickest ways to rehydrate your sinuses is to inhale steam. This can be done in a shower, by boiling water, breathing in the vapors, or using a humidifier or vaporizer. You can also visit a sauna to help improve nasal congestion and soothe your dry nose.
7. Irrigate Your Nasal Passages
Nasal irrigation, or nasal lavage, involves flushing your sinuses with a saline solution. This is done using a neti pot, which is a small teapot-like device, or a squeeze bottle. Nasal irrigation can help relieve congestion and remove irritants from your nose.
8. Apply Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties that make it an effective dry nose treatment. Apply a small amount of coconut oil to the inside of your nostrils several times a day.
9. Use Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum jelly can lubricate and protect your skin, including the delicate skin inside your nostrils. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to a cotton swab and gently massage it into the inside of your nose.
10. Deep Clean Your Home
One of the best ways to prevent a dry nose is to deep clean your home and eliminate allergens that can trigger symptoms. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove dust, pollen, and other irritants from your floors and furniture. Wash bedding, curtains, and stuffed animals frequently to reduce dust mites. You should also avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals, as these can dry out your sinuses.
Using a combination of these treatments should provide some relief for your symptoms. If your dry nose does not improve with home treatment, or if you have symptoms such as fever, yellow or green discharge, or severe pain, you should see your doctor. You may have a sinus infection or another medical condition that needs treatment.
