How Does Scalp Micropigmentation Work?

Used to give the appearance of a fuller hairline, scalp micropigmentation is a safe and innovative treatment that can be carried out singularly or in a series of treatments. Often used by people who are experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions, such as alopecia or cancer, or those with female or male pattern baldness, scalp micropigmentation offers impressive, long-term results.

What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

As the name suggests, scalp micropigmentation involves using color to create the appearance of hair follicles. Tiny dots are layered on the affected area using a device that’s similar to a tattoo gun. By using different shades of ink, practitioners can skillfully recreate your hairline to achieve a fuller and healthier look.

How is Scalp Micropigmentation Performed?

Before you have scalp micropigmentation, a technician will meet with you for a consultation. This enables them to assess your hairline, gather relevant medical information and discuss the treatment with you. Here, you’ll be able to determine what results can be achieved with scalp micropigmentation and whether it’s the right treatment for you.

At your first session, a topical cream or gel will be applied to relevant the area. This is a numbing agent, which minimizes any discomfort you may feel during the treatment. As scalp micropigmentation involves using an electrical device to apply ink to the skin, it is similar to having a tattoo. However, most people find that scalp micropigmentation is far less uncomfortable than having a tattoo.

Following this, the technician will begin applying the pigment to the affected area, using tiny dots to gradually build-up the appearance of hair follicles. Each treatment can last several hours, although you will be able to take a break at any time.

How Many Sessions Are Required?

The number of sessions required will depend on the size of the area being treated and the current level of hair loss. Many people choose to have between two and four sessions, but this varies depending on the amount of coverage you want to achieve. In general, each session is scheduled around one week apart, although your technician will be able to give you a specific timeframe, depending on your needs.

Protecting Your Scalp

Before you have your first sessions, the technician will remind you what you need to avoid afterwards. Typically, you should avoid getting the area wet for around four days after each scalp micropigmentation session. This means not washing your scalp or letting it get wet in the shower, but it also means that you should avoid workouts or excessive sweating too.

In addition to this, it’s usually advisable not to go swimming or use saunas or steam rooms in between sessions, as this could affect the results. Similarly, avoid exposing the treated area to the sun for at least four days after each treatment.

After your final session of scalp micropigmentation, you may also be advised to avoid swimming, saunas, steam rooms and the sun for at least 28 days, as this can affect your skin’s ability to retain the ink.

After each session, your technician may advise you to moisturize your scalp to keep the skin supple. Generally, you should avoid moisturizing immediately after the treatment but apply a mild moisturizing cream after approximately four days. However, an experienced and reputable technician will be able to provide bespoke advice during each session.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Scalp micropigmentation can last for around six to eight years, although some people find that it lasts much longer than this. Over time, the visibility of the ink may lessen slightly as your skin naturally exfoliates itself. Following your technician’s aftercare advice can help to ensure you get the best results.

Although scalp micropigmentation is generally considered to be semipermanent, rather than permanent, the treatment can be repeated when necessary. If you notice that the ink has started to fade slightly after five or six years, for example, you may decide to have follow up sessions to achieve your desired look.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation Safe?

Yes. Scalp micropigmentation is a safe and non-invasive way of minimizing the appearance of hair loss. Providing you choose the right practitioner, you can be confident that the treatment will be carried out safely and comfortably.
